The Bishop of Toledo, Ohio, Bishop Daniel Thomas, has released a detailed response to the gender ideology movement, describing attempts to change one’s gender as “medically assisted self-harm.” In his letter, Bishop Thomas writes that when people encounter Church teachings that conflict with their personal beliefs about identity and happiness, those teachings may seem unjustifiable and be rejected. However, he insists that the solution is not to dilute Catholic teaching. This letter represents one of the longest responses to gender ideology by a U.S. bishop to date. For analysis, Mary Rice Hasson, Director of the Person and Identity Project at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, joins to discuss Bishop Thomas’s response to the transgender movement. She also shares her views on whether Church leaders are doing enough on this issue.
